Have you ever taken a skills assessment test?
You know, the ones in the leadership books where you answer a bunch of stock questions to find out what color represents you or what your personality type is so you can better communicate with your coworkers?
At my corporate job, every once in a while there would be a new leader come into the mix who’d read a book and then start a campaign for everyone else to read the book and do the exercises. HR would get certified in the new methods and we’d all be speaking the same language, until they got inspired by the next thing.
One of these books we focused on for a while was called Strengths Finder by Tom Rath. Answering the questions in the quiz at the back of the book would reveal your top 5 strengths.
The theory was, if you knew your strengths, you’d be able to find more opportunities to use them in your current role or work towards a new position that leverages them to create more ease and flow in your life.
It made sense to me. And I love learning more about what makes me tick.
My entire department did the assessment, I got my results and found I was naturally using most of them. My top 5 strengths were all about communication, coming up with ideas, and being adaptable to lots of different situations.
About 10 years later - after the country song year, I was in a new role at the same company. A new team had been formed and the leader brought the Strengths Finder book out and we all did the test again.
My list of strengths was identical to the first time I’d done the assessment, with one change.
My ‘strength’ of Adaptability was replaced with the word Strategic.
I found this insight fascinating.
I had been ‘adaptable’ my whole life. I now understand it more as ‘people pleasing’. Yes, I could fit into any environment. But it didn’t mean it was good for me.
After my divorce and the death of my dad and others, I had fundamentally CHANGED. I was no longer content to adapt to what was happening around me. I had taken control of my life - on purpose. Strategic me was shining through. Even the Strengths Finder book said so!
If you’ve done as many of these types of assessments as I have, they often say that you are who you are and your results don’t generally change with time.
But I knew this wasn’t true.
Life sometimes throws events our way that shift everything. And it’s not always bad.
Sometimes that’s what we NEED to happen in order to become who we TRULY are.
The country song year of 2017/2018 was the worst year of my life. But it was also the best.
It was a chance to reinvent myself, take charge of what I wanted my life to feel like AND ACHIEVE IT.
On the outside, I was the same person. But all of the events of that year put me on a new path.
My friends couldn’t relate. My coworkers were oblivious. My family were dealing with their own grief and loss.
I had proudly ‘graduated’ from therapy (I’m still crazy, just not therapy crazy anymore lol). But I needed guidance to help me define what was NEXT in my evolution.
I couldn’t go back to being adaptable.
And that’s what I help people with now.
